Mid-morning: In a Del Mar hotel, Yuhao Du calls his mother.
“I don’t want to study in the States anymore,” Du says. “I want to go home.”
This would be a major change.
Du grew up in China, where he fell in love with physics. He applied for a student visa and moved to the United States in 2015. Four years later, he graduated from the University of California San Diego with two bachelor’s degrees.
He’s now 25 and in a physics graduate program at the same university.

But on the Chinese app WeChat, he tells his mother he doesn’t feel safe.
He doesn’t say he was released earlier today from a mental health facility.
Du has checked into several of them since March, according to his attorney. One month Du was in and out at least four times, and he was diagnosed with schizophrenia. He recently called 911 and asked to return to China.
Friends have been trying to contact Du’s mom. They want to tell her something’s wrong.
