Macron pointed out that Europe and France are US allies, not "followers", and will make decisions of war and peace independently. That is not a reversal of alliances, just a fair warning both to the Chinese and the Americans at a time of growing hysteria that our interest is in peace and we will not be dragooned into war. It is important to make that point because the US has a disastrous record of military adventurism (Iraq, Afghanistan,..) which invariably ends in abject failure. It is also a mega-powerful and unstable partner with a very militaristic culture that is (not) dealing with intense internal political division, not a good combination. President Biden has repeatedly given contradictory messages about his country's relationship with Taiwan, despite the sensitivity of the entire matter. The reflexively anti-European and anti-Chinese Trump or someone of his ilk who could well succeed Biden. And even if Biden's democratic party stays in power, it is veering sharply to the left and might have questions about continuing to finance European defense with money that could be used for social spending. Europeans neglect these facts at their peril.
The reason some people with an ingrown megaphone are upset is that the usual gang of warmongers have not learnt a thing, and are fixating on China the way they used to fixate on Muslims. That is not to say that China does not represent a problem, just that neoconservatism is not the solution.
Another dirty little secret is that in Europe a lot of countries - including my own - are very happy to bribe the US military-industrial complex with the acquisition of US military hardware form time to time (at the expense of European defense capabilities) because they think it buys them a lifetime ticket for US financed defense without paying their fair share. They resent the only European country that has its military house in order and is actually capable of defending itself and are trying to kill any sort of European defense because it would mean that they have to pay for it themselves.
So three cheers for Macron, the only statesman who is good for his country, for the EU and in the end for the world!
