Went to Target to return a bottle of disinfectant. The return clerk was a Chinese-American woman in her 50s, name tag said "Margarita Liu"—which is ironic, because she had all the warmth of a brick wall. She was all smiles and sunshine to the customers ahead of me, but the moment I stepped up, her face froze like I owed her rent. Gave me the dead-eye stare for two solid seconds, didn’t say a word, didn’t even move her hands to look at the item. I thought maybe she couldn’t find the barcode, so I turned the bottle to help—barcode facing up. Did that thaw her out? Nope. Just gave me another blank stare and asked, “What do you want?”
Seriously? What do I want? I’m standing in the returns line, item in one hand, receipt in the other, and she wants to play dumb like she’s never seen a return before. Funny how she didn’t ask the previous (non-Asian) customers that question. I told her I wanted to return the item. She snapped, “Then give me the receipt.” I pointed right at it—already placed there. She huffed, grabbed the scanner like it was beneath her, and muttered, “I don’t even know if this will work.”
What happened next? One quick *beep*, and the return was processed instantly. Yeah, so much for “not sure if it’ll work.” She made it sound like I was trying to return a nuclear warhead.
No one was behind me in line, so I calmly asked, “What’s your name and employee ID?” She blinked, stunned, and asked why. I told her, “Nothing major—just read me your name tag, I can’t see it clearly.” Then I asked her point blank, “What’s your problem? Why the attitude?” She looked confused. I told her I’d be filing a complaint—for racial discrimination.
Asked to speak to her supervisor—of course she wasn’t cooperative. But that’s fine, I don’t need her permission to hold her accountable. Another employee called a manager over—a young woman who said she was the supervisor. I laid out the complaint right there. Told her I’d also be calling customer service, and gave her name for the record too. Then, right in front of both of them, I called Target’s customer support, asked for the formal complaint process and the website for a written submission.
Tomorrow I’ll be writing up reviews on Yelp, Google, anywhere I can post. And I’m not wasting my time—ChatGPT will write it for me.
They say Chinese folks in America are hardest on their own kind. Well, today I’m doing my part to prove the stereotype true—with good reason.
