Setting up Alipay as a foreigner visiting China is straightforward and allows you to make cashless payments at millions of merchants, including shops, restaurants, taxis, and public transport. Below is a step-by-step guide based on the latest information available as of April 22, 2025:
Step-by-Step Guide to Set Up Alipay
Download the Alipay App:
Search for and download the official Alipay app from the Apple App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android). Ensure you’re downloading the legitimate app by Ant Group/Alibaba.
If possible, download the app before arriving in China to avoid potential network issues. The app automatically switches to the International Version when installed outside China, with English as the default language.
Register an Account:
Open the app and tap “Sign Up” or “Register”.
Enter your international mobile phone number (e.g., US, UK, or other non-Chinese number). Ensure the number can receive SMS in China for verification, as you’ll receive a verification code via text or a brief automated call.
Alternatively, you can sign up with an email address, but linking a phone number is recommended for account recovery and customer support.
Set a secure password (use a password manager for a strong, randomized password) and enable biometric login (e.g., FaceID or fingerprint) for faster and safer access.
Switch to the International Version (Optional):
After signing up, you can switch to the International Version of the app for a simpler interface in English. Go to Settings > General > Language and select English, or follow in-app prompts to switch.
The International Version supports multiple languages and is tailored for foreign users, offering features like currency conversion and in-app translation tools.
Verify Your Identity:
Due to Chinese financial regulations, identity verification is required for transactions exceeding $500 annually or to access higher transaction limits ($5,000 per transaction, $50,000 annually).
Navigate to Me > Settings > Account & Security > Identity Verification.
Upload a scan or photo of your passport (information page) and follow prompts for face verification. Ensure details match your bank records exactly.
Verification typically takes a few hours but can take up to a day, so complete this step before arriving in China if possible.
If you don’t verify your identity, you can still spend up to $2,000 per year without ID registration.
Link an International Bank Card:
Go to Me > Bank Cards > Add Bank Card or tap “Add Credit or Debit Card” on the home screen.
Add an international credit or debit card from major networks: Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Diners Club, Discover, or UnionPay. Dual-currency or single-currency cards issued in mainland China are not considered international cards.
Enter card details (card number, expiry date, CVV) or scan the card using the app’s camera feature.
Complete your bank’s authentication process (e.g., OTP via text or email). Some banks may require additional security verification, such as a CVC code.
Tip: Use a card with no foreign transaction fees (e.g., Revolut, Monzo, YouTrip, or Wise) to avoid extra charges. A 3% transaction fee applies for overseas credit card transactions above ¥200 (~$28 USD); transactions below ¥200 are fee-free.
Optional: Set Up TourCard (Prepaid Wallet):
For broader merchant acceptance, consider using the TourCard mini-app within Alipay, a prepaid digital wallet for short-term visitors (replacing the older TourPass feature).
Search for TourCard in the Alipay app, click Enter, and verify your details.
Top up the TourCard with your linked international card, up to a 10,000 CNY ($1,400 USD) limit. The minimum top-up is 100 CNY ($14 USD).
TourCard funds can be used at merchants that may not accept direct foreign card payments, especially for personal payment codes.
Test Your Setup (In China):
You cannot test Alipay payments outside China with an international account. The first transaction must be made in China.
To confirm your setup works, scan a merchant’s QR code or have them scan your Alipay QR code (found under Pay/Collect) for a small test payment (e.g., at a convenience store).
If the payment fails, it may be due to your bank rejecting the transaction. Contact your bank to authorize international payments or call Alipay’s English customer service at +86-571-2688-6000.
How to Use Alipay in China
Paying Merchants:
Scan a QR Code: Tap Scan in the app, point your camera at the merchant’s QR code, enter the amount, and confirm with your 6-digit payment password or biometrics. This is common for smaller shops or street vendors.
Show Your QR Code: Tap Pay/Collect to display your QR code, which the merchant scans. This is typical for restaurants, supermarkets, and larger stores.
Payments are instant, and vendors receive immediate notifications. You’ll see the transaction in the Balance or Transactions section (use the in-app translate button if details are in Chinese).
Supported Services:
Alipay is accepted by over 80 million merchants in China, including taxis (e.g., Didi), subways, buses, high-speed trains, hotels, restaurants, supermarkets, and tourist attractions.
Use Alipay mini-apps for additional services like booking train tickets (Railway 12306), ride-hailing (Didi), food delivery (Meituan), or renting bikes/power banks.
Note: Peer-to-peer transfers and wealth management services are not available for international users.
Merchant vs. Personal Payment Codes:
Merchant Payment Codes: These are used by certified merchants and generally support payments via linked foreign cards or TourCard funds.
Personal Payment Codes: These are for individual users and often require an Alipay balance or Chinese bank card, so they may not work with foreign cards. Ask merchants for a merchant code if a personal code fails.
Tips and Considerations
Prepare Before Arrival:
Set up and verify your Alipay account before traveling to avoid delays. Ensure your phone number works in China (consider a roaming plan or local SIM/eSIM for SMS).
Disable your VPN when adding a card or making payments, as it may cause network errors.
Transaction Limits:
Without ID Verification: $2,000 annual limit.
With ID Verification: $5,000 per transaction, $50,000 annual limit.
Check your bank’s policies for international transaction limits or additional fees.
Troubleshooting:
If a payment fails, confirm with your bank that the card is authorized for international use.
Contact Alipay’s English customer service via the app’s chat feature or hotline (+86-571-2688-6000) for account restrictions or issues.
Avoid linking multiple cards, as this may confuse Alipay’s system and lead to incorrect charges or refunds.
Alternatives:
Set up WeChat Pay as a backup, which also supports international cards for foreigners.
Carry a small amount of cash (Chinese Yuan) for rare cases where mobile payments aren’t accepted, as some merchants don’t take cash or provide change.
Use a multi-currency card (e.g., Wise, YouTrip) for better exchange rates and ATM withdrawals if needed.
Security:
Alipay uses encryption, facial recognition, and fraud detection, making it secure. Follow best practices: use a strong password, enable biometrics, and avoid sharing your QR code unnecessarily.
Monitor transactions via your bank’s notifications or Alipay’s transaction history for real-time currency conversion details.
Limitations
Alipay’s international version is primarily for merchant payments in China. You cannot use it outside China or for peer-to-peer transfers.
Some services, like “pay with face,” are unavailable to foreigners.
Not all merchants accept payments from international cards, especially for personal payment codes. TourCard can help bridge this gap.
Why Use Alipay?
China is a near-cashless society, with over 80% of transactions made via mobile apps like Alipay. It’s accepted almost everywhere, from street vendors to luxury hotels, and simplifies travel by eliminating the need for cash or currency exchanges. The app also offers convenient tools like translation and mini-apps for booking services, making it an essential tool for foreigners.
By following these steps, you’ll be ready to pay like a local in China, whether you’re buying street food, riding the subway, or booking a train ticket. If you encounter issues, Alipay’s English support and intuitive interface make troubleshooting manageable. Safe travels!
