The college boy that got expelled at Texas State University had the right to mock Kirk’s assassination in a university square if he wanted to, even if morally repugnant. SCOTUS precedent actually grants the highest level of free speech protection to the forum type known as the “traditional public forum”, and this under case law includes sidewalks, parks and common outdoor areas like university and town squares. And it even protects the KKK to demonstrate in this forum type per case law. But he was expelled, anyway. Courts in the past have ordered reinstatements for students expelled under a code that violated their free speech rights.

Conservatives are for free speech until they find out what it really means and it affects one of their own. Then all of a sudden free speech is out the window. And instead of just speaking out against persons posting highly offensive views about what happened, they proceed to place heavy pressure on employers of people like teachers, professors and doctors and others who have been in the news. And under pressure, these organizations end up terminating these people under cancel culture. There is nothing American about this. It is hypocrisy. Not all of these cases are legally actionable. But some of them included public employees. And even in the private sector the concept of free speech should still apply.

This is such a childish take. On all other rights we demand reciprocity.

Freedom of movement, private property, even the right to life. Deny what is the right of others and society will deny that same right for you.

We fine thieves, imprison kidnappers and yes, even still have the death penalty for murderers.
