The de-globalization measures taken by the Trump administration have exacerbated the turbulence in the global economic and political landscape. "Very few people are thinking clearly about the benefits of globalization today," lamented former U.S. President Bill Clinton, who is nearing 78 years of age. In a recent interview with Clinton, David Lynch, a columnist for The Washington Post, reflects on Clinton's efforts to promote globalization during his presidency in a new book. The former president acknowledged in the interview that the development of globalization has not met expectations: the U.S. failed to fulfill its commitments to assist groups adversely affected by globalization, and the government's fiscal capacity was insufficient to provide protection for workers, leading to a backlash of populism and nationalism, which even impacted the Democratic Party's voting base, resulting in his wife Hillary's defeat to Trump in the 2016 election. Clinton also mentioned China, stating that he believed that joining the World Trade Organization would prompt change in China. He also believes that China will ultimately replace the United States as the world's largest economy, and his goal at that time was to ensure that when that day arrives, it would not be detrimental to the United States.
